Tobacco Free Hokie T-Shirts: Frequently asked questions!

NOTE:  This event is currently scheduled to run in the Spring of 2009.  Check back in 2009 for info.

Q) What does tobacco-free and smoke-free mean?

Q) What is the procedure for getting a shirt?

A)  First, you must have an assigned Time Slot. Once you have your assigned Time Slot, come to McComas 143 during your assigned time. Only then will you be able to get your shirt!

Q) When can I get an assigned Time Slot?

A)   You need to check back here to see the exact times and locations.  They will be updated regularly, sometime even posted the night before, on this website.  Time Slot Booth Schedule. 

Q) Can I sign up during the week the Health Promotion Team is Distributing Shirts?

A)  Yes, if we still have openings, we will continue to assign Time Slots. Check back here to see if/when you can come by and get a Time Slot.

Q)  Can I e-mail you or sign-up on the web to get a Time Slot?

A)  Sorry, you have to come to one of the Tables/Booths described above.

Q) So we just get an assigned Time Slot, come during that time, and pick up a t-shirt? Is there anything else involved?

A) Just because you have a time slot, does not mean you won’t have to wait in line.  We do, however, expect you won’t have to wait hours like in previous years.  We speak with each person before we give him/her a shirt and this takes a some time. 

Q) Can I get in line for the shirts whenever I want (walk-in)?

A) No, we give you an assigned TIME SLOT slip and you will only be allowed to get in line DURING the time slot assigned to you. NO WALK-INS, NO ARRIVALS OUTSIDE YOUR TIME SLOT!

Q) Can I make a time slot for my friend, sorority sisters, fraternity brothers, family, etc.?

A) No, you must make your own time slot, and your friends must make their own.  You'll bring your ID when you get your shirt and we'll verify your identity.

Q) If I have an assigned Time Slot, can I bring my friends with me at that time?

A) No, the assigned Time Slot is only for you, not your friends.

Q) What happens if I’m late to my time slot?

A) It is very likely that you will not get a shirt this year.  Nevertheless, there might still be a way.  You must e-mail this address (look on your time slot slip for the email address) 24hrs before your time slot.  If you do not do this, we will not reschedule you - under any circumstances.   If we have extra Time Slots at the end of the campaign we will contact you and try to reschedule you.  There is no guarantee that you will be offered a time to reschedule.  The best thing to do is not miss your time slot. 

Q) Does this Time Slot system really work?

A) Yes, the days of 1-1.5 hour long lines are gone.   It creates less stress on you and us. 

Q) What if I use tobacco or smoke?  Can I still get a t-shirt?

A) No, we only give shirts to people who are Tobacco-Free and Smoke-Free.  If you decide to go Tobacco-Free in the future, then of course we’ll give you one.  We’d be excited to help you do this however we can!   If you become a lifetime Non-Smoker and Non-Tobacco User, we would be thrilled to have you wear one of our t-shirts.

Q) Where do we pick up the shirts?

A) McComas 143, the gym side

Q) When are you giving the shirts out?

A) The last week in September.  You find out when to come to McComas when you are assigned your time slot.

Q) How many t-shirts can I get?

A) One per person per year! Sorry that’s it!

Q) What if I already have a t-shirt?

A) If you have a t-shirt from previous years, feel free to get a new one.   If you already received a shirt this year, you can't get another (i.e., you can't get two new shirts in the same academic year)!

Q)  What if I’m faculty or staff?  Can I get a shirt?

A) Sorry, but this is only a promotion for VT Students.

Q) How many shirts are you giving away?

A) Over 1,100!

Q) What are the t-shirt colors?

A)  See the windows in front of Wellness Resource Center!  There are about 8 different colors.

Q) What sizes are the t-shirts?

A) Small, medium, large, XL in all colors. XXL - XXXL in limited colors. 

Q)  Who sponsors this promotion?

A)  The Health Promotions Team sponsors the Non-Smoking Hokie T-shirt campaign. We are part of Schiffert Health Center and directly managed by the Office of Health Education.

Q) Why does the HPT support this event?

A) As a team, and as individuals, we encourage and support living a Tobacco-free and Smoke-free life.  We challenge fellow Hokies who use tobacco to quit (for life) and reward those who are tobacco free with awesome Non Smoking Hokie T-shirts.

Q)  What happens if I missed distribution this year?  Will you be doing it later this semester?

A)  If you missed this distribution year, you will have to wait till fall semester of next year. This is a once a year promotion.

Q) Where do you get the money for the promotion?

A) Beginning in 2005, the Schiffert Health Center will be funding this campaign.  We believe that non-smoking is in everybody's best interest; we support cleaner air initiatives; will gladly help any VT student stop using tobacco; and fully encourage non-tobacco users to remain tobacco-free.
