Self-Assessment: Step Four

Taking temperature

Select Your Symptoms

You should call your health care provider if you experience any of the following:

Within the first 24 hours if you think you might have an influenza like illness (ILI). The “flu” is characterized by sudden onset of:

  • All over BAD body aches/headache
  • Fever higher than 100
  • Extreme exhaustion/malaise (feel so weak that you can barely get out of bed)

Also commonly experienced with the Flu:

  • Chest discomfort and cough (can become severe)
  • Stuffy (congested) nose
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat

Symptoms that have not shown improvement within seven (7) days

Persistent, frequent cough that is continuous throughout the day for more than seven (7) days

Ear pain, loss of hearing, blood or discharge from the ear

Severe headache and confusion or the worst headache you have ever had with no relief with Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.

Stiff neck

Rash

Temperature of more than 100° F. that either

  • Does not reduce with the use of Acetaminophen (Tylenol®). Ibuprofen (Motrin® or Advil®)

  • Lasts for more than 5 days

Chest pain, wheezing, or shortness of breath

Swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck, groin, and armpits

Are pregnant and have ILI symptoms

Enlarged tonsils that inhibit swallowing, choke you, alter your voice, or are coated with white or yellow discharge

Severe facial pain

Have a history of diabetes, heart, kidney or lung disease and have ILI symptoms.

Emergency Warning Signs

If you experience these emergency warning signs, you should seek medical care right away!

In children:
 
  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Not waking up or not interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
  • Fever with a rash
In adults:
 
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting
