Who can receive health care services at the Schiffert Health Center over the summer?

Students who pay the health fee have unlimited access to all health care services available at the Schiffert Health Center during the session(s) for which they pay the fee. · Students who will not be enrolled but are required by their department or college to be on campus as a part of their academic program of study are also eligible to pay the summer health fee. Documentation from their college is required. · Part-time summer school students who elect not to pay the health fee are eligible to pay the daily use charge. · Students who are not enrolled in the summer but who paid the health fee for the preceding spring semester and plan to enroll for classes in the fall semester are eligible to pay the daily use charge.
What services are provided by the Schiffert Health Center?
· Summer services are identical to those offered during the fall and spring semesters. Click here to see the Schiffert Health Center Services brochure. · Most services offered by the Schiffert Health Center are available at no additional cost to students who have paid the health fee or the daily use charge. · Some services such as X-rays, certain lab tests, and some medications do have an additional charge. Both those students who have paid the health fee and those who have paid the daily use charge will be charged the applicable costs for these services.
How much is the summer health fee?
· The summer health fee is $72.50 per summer session. · The fee is automatically charged to full-time (6 or more hours per session) summer school students. · Part-time students must request to pay the summer health fee as a part of their enrollment in summer school. Part-time students who do not pay the fee during enrollment must pay the daily use charge to obtain Schiffert Health Center services. · Students may only pay the summer health fee for the session(s) in which they are taking classes. If they are in Blacksburg before or after their summer session classes they must pay the daily use charges if they wish to be seen at the Health Center. · Students who pay the health fee for the spring semester, both summer sessions, and the following fall semester have continuous eligibility for Health Center services without having to pay a daily use charge. This includes the break periods before and after summer school.
What is the daily use charge?
· The daily use charge is $50. Students who pay this charge have unlimited access to all health care services available at the Schiffert Health Center for the day on which they pay the charge.
What happens if I pay the summer daily use charge for a Health Center visit but have to return to the Health Center later during the summer for additional care?
· The daily use charge for a follow-up visit is $20. The follow-up charge will apply only if your return visit was recommended by the practitioner who saw you during your initial visit or if you are returning because your original problem did not resolve. · Each visit which includes evaluation of a new problem not previously evaluated during the summer will be charged the daily use charge of $50.
What if I need to continue allergy shots or other injections which I received at the Health Center during the spring semester? What if I need to fill or refill a prescription at the Health Center over the summer? What if I see an outside physician and want to obtain the lab tests or x-rays at the Health Center?
· A limited use charge is charged to students who have not paid the health fee for specific types of visits that do not require full use of the health center or being seen by a Schiffert Health Center medical practitioner. The limited use charge is $10. Visits covered by the limited use charge are:
Injections: There are two options. Established patients already receiving scheduled injections at SHC for conditions such as allergies or birth control may pay the $10 limited daily use charge plus the established injection charge. Patients receiving an injection for the first time at SHC will be charged the $50 one-day use charge for their initial visit. Alternatively, allergy patients may pay the one-day charge ($50.00) the first time that they come in for the session and for that will be allowed to receive their allergy injections for the entire session. They will be charged the established injection charges at each visit. Note: There are two sessions in the summer and the charge must be paid for both if services are received in both.
Pharmacy: Prescriptions may be filled or refilled for the $10 charge plus any applicable medication charges.
Lab/X-ray: Laboratory and/or X-ray studies ordered by an outside practitioner may be obtained by paying the $10 charge plus applicable lab/X-ray charges. All lab work will be performed by a contract laboratory and will carry an additional charge. The $10 charge covers the cost of drawing the blood sample, its handling, etc.
What if I have an appointment with a health educator or the dietitian?
· Visits to health education or the dietitian that are the result of a referral by a Schiffert Health Center practitioner during a visit covered by the summer health fee or daily use charge are covered by that payment. If the visit/appointment is not as a result of such a referral a health education/dietitian charge of $20 will be made for the visit.
