Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  Emergency Care - I'm sick and the Health Center is closed, What should I do?

If you are experiencing a personal emotional problem or are a victim of sexual assault and need to speak with a counselor please call the Schiffert Health Center at 231-6444.

If you need non-emergent medical care at times when the Health Center is closed you must be seen by a private physician in the community.  All expenses and charges for medical care received outside the Schiffert Health Center are the student’s responsibility.

After-hours medical care is available at the Montgomery Regional Hospital Emergency Department 24 hours per day.  Please call 953-5122 for information.

After-hours care is also available weekday evenings and limited weekend hours at Carilion Family Medicine-Blacksburg.  Please call 951-0352 for information and location.

All local area hospitals provide emergency medical care.  The Virginia Tech Rescue Squad and the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad provide emergency services to the campus and local community.

Q.  The Health Center has blocked me from registering for classes.  What should I do?

If your schedule is on hold, it is probably due to one of the following reason:

  1. Your Immunization History Form is INCOMPLETE
  2. You resigned from school for medical reasons
  3. or some other department has issued the block, in which case SHC can't help you resolve the issue.

Q.  Can my prescription for "the pill" be filled at the Health Center pharmacy?

A Virginia Tech student who has paid the health fee for the current term is eligible to have her oral contraceptive prescription filled at the Schiffert Health Center Pharmacy.

The original prescription may be presented to the pharmacy or the prescription can be called in by the doctor's office directly to the pharmacist at (540) 231-8103. If the prescription is a refill from another pharmacy, we ask that the labeled pack be brought to our pharmacy so we can call that pharmacy to transfer your prescription.

Our pharmacy currently stocks the following oral contraceptives:  Desogen, Mircette, Ortho Cyclen, Ortho Novum 1/35, Ortho Novum 7/7/7, Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.  The pharmacy does not accept insurance. A student is responsible for filing their own insurance claims. If your prescription is for a different oral contraceptive, you will need to have that prescription filled at an outside pharmacy in the community.

If you have any questions, please call the pharmacy counter at 231-8103 or e-mail the pharmacy at the following address: hunterjs@vt.edu.
