Making Appointments
Schiffert Health Center maintains an APPOINTMENT ONLY system. Please be aware that Schiffert Health Center does not make appointments nor provide medical advice by e-mail. Check the hours of operation.
Call 540-231-6444 for the clinical appointment menu. If you have a provider preference, please indicate this when you call for an appointment. The provider staff is composed of physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. You will be given a Primary Care Clinic appointment as follows:
For routine care, appointments can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance.
For an acute medical problem, you should have an appointment within 24-48 hours. The only student visits which will be handled on a walk-in basis will be urgent care. We know your time is valuable and we will make every effort to serve you as quickly as possible.
If you feel your problem is more immediate in nature and that you require evaluation earlier than your appointment time, ask to speak to the Triage Nurse.
Canceling Appointments
Because of the high demand for the limited number of appointments available at Schiffert Health Center it is important that you keep your appointment; or if unable to do so, cancel it before the time of the appointment so that it may be used by another student. Failure to do so will result in a $25.00 charge which will be billed to you through the University’s Student Accounts. The charge will be applied to missed appointments in all clinics.
Cancellations may be made by:
calling the health center at 231-6444 or
sending an email to shccancl@vt.edu.
Be sure to include your name, student ID number, and the date and time of the appointment. Please note that appointments cannot be requested or made by email.
When You Arrive At The Health Center
Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment and check in at the appropriate clinic. If you are late for your appointment, SHC may ask that you reschedule your appointment at a later day/time.
Check in at the appropriate clinic. (Women's Clinic for women's health; Primary Care for general medical conditions; Allergy/Immunization Clinic for allergy shots and immunizations).
The Clinic Receptionist will process your appointment paperwork. A nurse will then interview you and ask your reason for the appointment. The nurse will take your temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate, ask if you have any allergies to medications, and record a brief history. If you are female, the nurse will ask when your last normal menstrual period occurred. Your provider will then see you.
