Richard J. Ferraro, Ph.D., Assistant Vice President for Students Affairs
Dr. Rick Ferraro has
28 years of experience in higher education, having served both
as an academic and student-affairs administrator. Though he took
classes in higher education administration, he earned his Ph.D.
in Renaissance history. He has taught courses related to
historical and student-life subjects at several universities.
As a Dean of Students, and then as an Asst. Vice President, he
has supervised student health and counseling centers both at
private and public universities.
He took his undergraduate degree in History and Government, with
distinction, at Cornell University. His Masters and Ph.D. were
completed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and he carried
additional graduate courses at The Johns Hopkins University. He
was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Italy; and he was a
recipient of the Prix de Rome prize of the American Academy of
Rome.
He has worked as an academic or student affairs dean at Emory
University, the College of William and Mary, Columbia
University, and Bucknell University, before commencing his
duties at Virginia Tech in January of 2007. However, he has
older ties with this university, as his son, brother-in-law, and
father-in-law all studied at Virginia Tech.
At Virginia Tech he supervises the Schiffert Health Center, the
Cook Counseling Center, Recreation Sports, the Office of
Services for Students with Disabilities, Alcohol Abuse
Prevention Center, and Health Education.
As a first-generation college student, who found his life
transformed by his undergraduate and graduate experiences at
great land-grant universities, he is committed to enhancing the
academic and student life experiences for students of all ages
at Virginia Tech.
