Billing and Insurance

The student health fee, included in each year’s tuition, covers the majority of services provided by Schiffert Health Center—unlimited visits and most laboratory procedures. However, some services require a minimal health center charge. If you visit or are referred to any outside healthcare provider, you are responsible for all charges incurred there.

If you are required to pay for a service, you will be billed through Accounts Receivable. The description of the charge on your billing statement will read “Medical Charge.” No other information about the service paid for will be shown. You also have the option to pay at Schiffert Health Center by cash, check, or Hokie Passport.

You do not need to have insurance to use Schiffert Health Center, however some insurance providers will cover the cost of various services. Virginia Tech also offers a student health care option.

Private Medical Insurance

Schiffert Health Center does not accept insurance, nor do we directly bill insurance companies. You can find a copy of your itemized statement in your Healthy Hokies Portal to submit to your insurance carrier. Reimbursement from your insurance company is entirely your responsibility. Use the Instructions for itemized bills document (located in the sidebar of this page) to learn how to access your statements in the Healthy Hokies Portal.

Questions regarding Schiffert Health Center medical records or billing information can be asked by email through our business office.
